Ex-Monk Charged With Rapping British Tourist
A 17-year-old monk who was arrested for the rape and robbery of a 39-year-old British woman in Battambang province Tuesday was formally charged Thursday and placed in detention ahead of trial, police said. Chhen Sokhoeun, chief of the Battambang police information bureau, said the suspect, Phorn Sophoan, was sent to the provincial court and then transferred to the province’s prison. Phorn Sophoan was defrocked and arrested Tuesday following the attack on the tourist while he escorted her on a vistit to caves in Banan district. “We charged him in a rape case,” Provincial Prosecutor Sar Yosthavrak said. Nun Nget, supreme patriarch of the Mohanikaya Buddhist sect, said the case would not tarnish the clergy’s reputation. “It is an individual issue. The individual should account for his actions,” he said.
